Interactive Digital Signage With Temperature Check

Interactive Digital Signage With Temperature Check

With the Covid-19 pandemic significantly impacting almost every aspect of daily life, leading IoT and industrial computing specialist, Advantech, has used AI and big data to provide an innovative and safe method of identifying and helping to stop the spread of infections.

Working alongside an all-in-one smart signage service provider, Advantech’s DS-082 digital signage player was integrated with facial recognition capabilities and an IR thermographic camera to provide a kiosk system that can deliver contactless temperature measurements. In addition, the kiosk was able to display advertisements and safety notifications. The result is a smart digital signage kiosk that can identify visitors who have a fever or elevated temperatures and recognise if visitors are wearing face masks.

If the system detects elevated temperatures or a lack of mask wearing, an automated alert is sent to a centralised control room – an ideal solution for airports, shopping malls and public spaces which continue to review how they can operate whilst maintaining customer safety.

Challenges

With modern demands for digital signage kiosks to include bigger and brighter screens, as well as significantly thinner cabinets, the challenge for Advantech was to integrate their technology into a slim cabinet without impacting on performance. The system would also require high-performance computing capabilities to manage the processing and analysing of images, measuring temperatures and displaying advertisements. It was also a requirement to support wireless connectivity to transmit temperature data in real-time and send automated alerts.

Thin, powerful digital signage

For this project, Advantech’s DS-082 ultra-slim 4K digital signage player and UCAM-220TT IR thermographic camera was selected. At only 19 mm thick, the DS-082 is easily installed into cabinets. Powered by AMD Ryzen R100 processors and an AMD VEGA GPU with up to 11 computing units, the DS-082 can handle multi-task operations such as temperature checking, facial recognition, and multimedia content broadcasting.

The DS-082 also offers diverse I/O for connecting with a range of devices, including an RJ-45 connector for the IR camera, HDMI 2.0 interface for a screen display, and M.2 interface for Wi-Fi connectivity. Moreover, it’s integrated with Advantech’s WISE-PaaS/SignageCMS content management software for easy signage network management upon deployment. WISE-PaaS/SignageCMS allows users to easily edit, layout, schedule and dispatch signage content. An up-to-date scheduling function is also available to allow real-time management of display information and advertising campaigns. Overall, the DS-082 simplifies digital signage network management and offers a reduced total cost of ownership and accelerated time-to-market.
