HARTING introduce new expanded beam modules for Han-Modular cable assemblies

HARTING's compact, robust and economical connector is designed for controllers, small drives and control cabinets.

Fiber optic connectors – HARTING expanded beam cable assemblies; the most reliable solution for optical cabling in the harshest industrial environments.

Expanded beam technology is extremely robust and insensitive to dirt. It was designed to ensure reliable optical connections in harsh and dirty environments. The regular assembly and disassembly of an expanded beam cabling in harsh environments is a hassle-free process when compared to standard connectors.

  • Uses up to 30% less space compared to Han® 3A: Compact connector for power that can be installed in the field
  • Flexible in use: Transmits data, signals and power with up to twelve contacts
  • Highly versatile: Modular system of inserts and accessories suitable for a wide variety of applications (IP20/IP65)
  • Less time required for installation: Fast connection using Snap-in technology – no screws required
  • Minimum inventory needed: Clearly structured connector system based on a few basic components
  • Reduced costs: Affordable installation connectors

Standard (IP20) optical connectors based on ceramic ferrules, such as ST, SC, LC and E2000 connect the optical fibres by means of physical contact of the polished fibre ends. As this connection technology is not suitable for regular disconnection and mating outdoors due to its susceptibility to dirt, HARTING launched the Expanded Beam connector.

HARTING Expanded Beam connectors increase the diameter of the light beam by approximately 40 times by use of a lens. The Expanded Beam is coupled into the mating connector, and then reduces the beam back to the original fibre diameter with another lens in the second connector. Since the light beam diameter transmitted between the connectors has been increased by approximately 40 times, the impact that a 0.020 mm dust particle had in a standard IP20 connection is 40 times smaller.

Expanded beam connecting cable

  • 2- and 4-channel
  • Multi-mode and single-mode
  • Customised lengths on request
  • Fiber optic solution for industrial outdoor use

Expanded beam modules, pre-assembled

  • 2- and 4-channel
  • Multi-mode and single-mode
  • Customised lengths and variants available
  • Also suitable for rough industrial environments
  • Can be used in docking frame solutions
  • Han-Modular® in the eCatalog

HARTING has extended this connection technology to the Han-Modular® portfolio. Two further modules for use in fibre-optic cable assemblies are available as 2- and 4-channel versions. With these modules, it is possible to regularly disconnect and reconnect an outdoor fibre-optic connection with a much lower risk of contaminating the sensitive fibre ends.

Areas in which the use of HARTING Expanded Beam cable assemblies makes reliable optical connections possible are, for example:

  • Oil and gas production
  • Mining, surface or underground
  • Tunnel bore construction
  • Concert and television events (mobile use outdoors)
  • Outdoor industrial installations (not fixed)
  • Inter-car jumper cable in railway sector
  • Optical connections in docking systems (docking frames)

If cabling needs to be reguarly installed or reconnected in such harsh environments, the open matng face can quickly become dirty

It is mot possible to reconnect a connector when the mating face has become contaminated

The expanded beam connector can be cleaned easily and quickly

Both connectors are reconnected and this establishes the link. Expanded beam cable assemblies are used wherever extremely contaminated conditions prevail and fiber-optic connections are required.

A global market leader in the manufacture of connectors and interconnection systems, Harting is renowned for its reliable connector solutions. HARTING’s products cover data processing, control and measurement applications within industrial machinery, food and beverage equipment, rail, automotive, energy distribution, wind power and robotics.
