Electric Vehicle Charging Systems Using Advantech’s MIO-5251 Rugged Single Board Computer
With the growth of the electric vehicle market in the UK, EV charging systems are becoming increasingly common in car parks and motorway service stations. And as the adoption of electric vehicles continues, backed by Government schemes and wider consumer choice, the growth of the electric charging stations is set to continue.
For organisations looking to integrate a solution that meets safety and outdoor environment requirements, stations need to be rugged, flexible, and durable. In addition, for true growth, solutions need longevity with applicable warranty and support structures in place.
The Advantech solution
To create EV charging systems that met this challenge, Advantech combined its IDK-2115, a 15” XGA1,200cd/m2 ultra-high brightness industrial display with its MIO-5251, 3.5” rugged single board computer. With Advantech offering a worldwide support network, it additionally prepares a number of certifications for exporting products globally to ensure systems are safe and compliment with local regulations.
Wide temperature support
To ensure stable operability under harsh outdoor environment, the integrated system comprised rugged and durable hardware. The MIO-5251 SBC with RAM/mSATA SQFlash SSD supports operating temperatures between -40°C ~ 85°C for critical environments. Moreover, it supports the combination of SBC and LCD display. Advantech’s IDK-2115 LCD display supports wide temperature operation of -20°C ~ 60°C making the device ideal for any outdoor location.
Flexible expansion and multiple I/O options
The MIO-5251 is equipped with multiple I/O options on ports such as 2 x RS-232 and 2 x RS-232/422/485, and 2 x Giga Ethernet which can connect to several devices such as printers or POS. This specific industrial SBC also allows for future expansion I/O ports, through the MI/O extension connector. This would allow the charging station to meet any urgent upgrades required, such as boosting CPU performance.

Superior outdoor visibility with advanced reliability
Advantech’s IDK-2115 15” LCD display boasts ultra-high brightness and an optical bonding solution which together perfectly meet the requirements of outdoor systems. Designed with an advanced LED backlight that boosts the brightness from an original 400 cd/m2 to 1200 cd/m2, it makes the display appear bright and clearly readable even in direct strong sunlight. An anti-glare coating on the cover glass also enhances the readability of the display and offers improved vandal resistance whilst protecting the display from dust and moisture ingress.
