Designer offices at The Shard installs LED upgrade

APC Lighting completes a project for design-led, flexible office space provider, The Office Group, at their prestigious workspace at The Shard.

The Office Group wanted to overcome a series of dark spots and inadequate lighting on floor 24 and 25 of their high-end office space at The Shard. APC lighting was consulted on improving the existing LED lighting system with a view to increasing lighting levels by approximately 25%.

The brief

After completing several projects at The Shard for its property maintenance provider, APC Lighting was put in touch directly with The Office Group (TOG). APC Lighting then worked directly with the TOG to ensure their needs were met and that the project advanced in accordance with the client’s deadline without disruption to their day-to-day operations.

TOG is a commercial, flexible workspace provider with a collection of desirable properties across London. Having recently added floors 24 and 25 of The Shard to their offering, there was a desire to improve the existing LED lighting system which was deemed too dark in places and lacked the luxurious feel that TOG aims to deliver its clients. TOG also wanted a lighting control system installed giving them the capabilities to manage the lighting on their floors, rather than by the landlord’s system which they could not access.APC Lighting response

Our response

It was a specific requirement of TOG that the colour temperature of their lighting was 3000K (warm white). Once the lighting design and projected outcomes had been agreed with the client, a team of APC Lighting engineers carried out upgrades to the existing lighting system over a period of one week, working in the evenings to allow TOG’s usual day-today business to continue.

Access to The Shard was carefully managed and required pre-arranged security clearance prior to every visit. APC’s Lighting engineers and project managers were professional and considered health and safety and on-site security a key factor whilst working on the project.

APC lighting will be returning to The Shard to complete further works with the building maintenance provider to repair and upgrade failed LED light fittings in communal lift areas.

More detail about this project

Following discussions with TOG and a site survey to examine the existing lighting system, APC Lighting suggested an approach to help rectify the inadequate diffusion of light. It had initially been reported to APC that the existing lighting system was linked to the building management system and programmed to dim based on external lux levels.

APC conducted a series of site surveys working with TOG. This highlighted several key areas within the office space which suffered heavily from dark spots and an overall gloomy appearance. APC explored the options to re-lamp the existing spotlights with a wider beam lamp and increase the lumen output by approximately 25% without the need for a complete lighting re-fit.

It was agreed to upgrade the existing bespoke Orluna Lighting’s light fittings in the main open-plan office areas with improved LED engines from Orluna. Following the tests carried out, it was possible to achieve a higher efficacy (lumens per watt) with a wider beam angle. The new light engines were the same wattage as the ones being replaced. This resulted in the office space having a better overall coverage of light, with an improved lux level (in the region of an increase of 400 lux) at no additional energy consumption.

The communal corridor leading from the lift lobby to the open-plan office space was considered to be too brightly lit. APC was able to reduce the output of the lighting by 20% by reprogramming the existing LED drivers, achieving a more balanced lighting output in keeping with the rest of the office space.

Following the upgrades to the spotlighting, further work was agreed with TOG to upgrade existing strip lighting within the kitchenette areas which was also deemed inadequate. APC upgraded these areas using quality Tridonic LED flexible tape. APC also was asked to remove existing linear bar light fittings over a bar area which were now deemed to be inappropriate with the newly proposed décor. TOG purchased their own LED pendant fittings this time, with APC Lighting providing an installation only service to complete the works. These fittings were also fitted in a newly created seating/work area which was previously unlit.
